When the GSX1100G was introduced in 1991, the bike press didn't really know what to make of it. Here was a derivative of the mighty GSX-R1100 "slingshot" engine, in a heavyweigt touring chassis with distinctive retro styling reminiscent of the VX800 model introduced around the same time.
Just like the earlier GS Suzuki models, ”G” after the model name tells that GSX1100G was shaft driven. The package was completed by 5-speed gearbox, oversize disc brakes front and rear, and 6-spoke light alloy wheels.

Even though the bike was initially marketed as a sports oriented "naked bike", Suzuki also supplied a range of touring accessories like a large fairing or rack/pannier/saddlebag sets. Aftemarket wire spoke wheels were a popular aftermarket item especially in Europe.
In retrospect, perhaps the GSX1100G occupied the same niche later taken up by the Badit and Inazuma models - fast, powerful, affordable every day motorcycles. But unlike the Bandit or 'Zuma, the 11G offered something extra - the convenience of not having a drive chain!
I own two of these trusty steeds, a 91 and a 93. One is chopped to a sick Thunderdome Rat Tracker and the other is wrapped in Faux Gator Skin.
ReplyDeleteAllow me to expand on this Shaft driven oil cooled monster.. I mean Gixxer... I mean GixxG!! Better yet, let me ask you this..
What do you get when you give a Gixxer 1100 a mid range cam and then attach it to a short geared 5 speed like the Intruder 800?
You get a Quarter Mile Beast that tries to rip your arms out of their socket from 7500rpm onward!! Hands down the quickest bike 1/8 mile...
